A look back at the biggest Stampin’ Up!® papercraft and card making trends of 2022

As the year comes to a close, I thought I would take a look back at some of 2022’s biggest cardmaking and papercrafting trends in the Stampin’ Up!® world.

Looking back, there were several stand-out themes which appeared time and time again, not just in my own projects but in those created by our fabulous Stampin’ Up!® Artisan Design Team and talented demonstrators worldwide.

Here are the top cardmaking and papercrafting themes which I have identified from the past year.

Mega-brights

Really bright pinks were everywhere! This is not something I was too happy about but I do love how the trend has extended into using non-traditional colours, such as Christmas trees in the brightest Stampin’ Up!® colours of Polished Pink and Granny Apple Green.

At the risk of overthinking (who? me?), I do wonder if this trend is a reaction to the dark days of the pandemic. Are we overcompensating by bringing bright cheerful colours into our lives? If so, I fully expect this fun trend to carry over well into 2023.

Rainbows

Rainbows have been everywhere this year. Again, is this a sign that we are craving brighter days ahead? But 2022’s rainbows weren’t all in traditional colours; pastels, monochromatic and even earthy browns have all been used for rainbows on Stampin’ Up!® projects and in the wider crafting world.

The focus hasn’t only been on rainbow arcs. Rainbow colours are popping up everywhere, as gorgeous colourful backgrounds. I love bright colours (just not pink!) so this is a trend I was happy to hop onto.

Stripes

Maybe as a sister trend to the rainbows theme, stripes have been everywhere in 2022. Bold stripes, narrow stripes, diagonal stripes and yes of course rainbow stripes. Stripes are a great way to add interest to a Stampin’ Up!® project without dominating the design. They go equally well with flowers and on masculine projects.

Blended backgrounds

Blended backgrounds have provided soft colour on a huge number of projects. Ever since Stampin’ Up!® introduced the Blending Brushes to our product range, this technique has dominated. Blending Brushes provide such an easy way to add soft colour and ombré effects – and great news! The new Stampin’ Up!® Jan-Apr Mini Catalogue has small blending brushes so you can control your colour application in more detail.

Yes, blended backgrounds are here to stay – which I am delighted about, as I love them.

Gnomes

What can I say? Gnomes are HUGE. They’re not my cup of tea really but I know lots of people love them – and they are everywhere. So much so that although the Kindest Gnomes Christmas stamp set is retiring soon, a new one called Friendly Gnomes will soon be available in the new Stampin’ Up!® Jan-Apr Mini Catalogue, which fits the same Gnomes Dies.

Roll-back cards

Every now and then, a new card design turns up and everyone is doing it! This year was the year of the roll-back card. I don’t know who made it first but soon we were all at it, carefully rolling back the top layer of our cards to reveal the Designer Series Paper beneath. Will this carry through to 2023? That remains to be seen.

I hope you have enjoyed my look back at 2022’s cardmaking trends. Which ones of these have you tried – and can you think of any I missed?
